English word THEME

I get a ton of emails where people ask for missing English words. I keep explaining that we are a Palauan to English dictionary and we aren't trying to have a Palauan definition for every possible English word. Some of the recent words that people have asked about are THEME, PINK, and ZOO.

Anyway, on the one hand, we are almost surely right to not try to define every possible English word. But, on the other hand, if we can help people, it might be nice. The person asking about THEME is a Palauan elementary school teacher and she is trying to teach her class. So, can we help her? How would you genius awesome people translate THEME into Palauan?

Omy, I had to go back in my brain to elementary school days to figure out the best translation that we may have used in that era.

‘Theme’- I believe a Japanese word is used ‘dai’ per se: our theme for the dance’ - a dai era ngliked… theme for a our field trip…a dai er a ‘Ensor’ ’ er kid a….

Zoo: blil a charm

Pink: I believe ‘tech’ was used in my era lmao. Ko era bedengel/ iro er a tech.

My thoughts…I’m sure someone else have a much more broaden def’s.

I tend to agree with Ulang. We used the Japanese “dai” and “dodai” when we talked about themes for papers, especially essay contests in schools.

All the warm colors are Bekerekard so I’ve used that for anything from red through yellow and all the colors in between. Even saying Bebekerekard sometimes.

Blil a charm or osongel el blil a charm could be a way to explain what a Zoo is, but I just say Zoo.

That’s the beauty of using italics in translations. Every Palauan knows what Pink and Zoo is, so I just italicize it and that’s that.

I like to remind people that when asking about language to not ask “what the Palauan word is for something but rather IS there one?”
