"Demei believes the second oldest banana plant in Palau is tuarechelid (Alpenia), the name meaning “bananas of the gods.” I think the fruits are not edible. Another banana considered Palauan, or at least one that is known to be old, is cherasech. Demei also considers the fiber banana to be an old banana, but it was imported after the other three. It is called blangtalos, from the Spanish word, platanos (plantain—bark used for cord). Cultivation or planting of blangtalos was selective for it was mostly utilized as a fiber plant. Its fruits were not eaten. Some old bananas besides the other four above which seem to have been lost or faded from memory include besoi el keam and remutel. There may be others."

The Ethnobotany of Palau (2020) lists four members of the Musaceae family:  (1) Musa coccinea Andrews = bungeltuu; (2) Musa textilis Nee = blantalos; (3) Musa troglodytarum L. = erasech [cherasech]; and (4) Musa x paradisiaca L. = tuu On Sunday, October 8, 2023 at 06:18:00 PM PDT, John Bent @.***> wrote:
