TGM3 does the same thing. it expects to find a d drive, and creates a TGM3 directory on it for the sram data. as this game has user accounts, this is highly important.
There's a way to patch the game to create the sram directory inside the game directory. i dunno how it's done for the other games.
There appears to be an attempt to auto locate this string, but i don't think it always works.

it uses forward slashes instead of backslashes in filenames. :)
Same issue but i have a D Drive in my PC... KOF MIRA keep crashing at startup an KOF 98 show me an endless black screen.
KOF - MIRA loads to a black screen before crashing out.
KOF - 98 hangs indefinitely with a windowed black box.
Both work perfectly with a D drive present and create book keeping files.
