Maybe a good idea can be also allow to choice "silent times", for example allow choice don't make sounds from 22h to 6 and from 12 to 2. ofc exceptions can be added ie always make sound even on silent times never make sound.
Thumb up
+1
The actual sound file is very blunt. I can probably control the volume through the app specific volume slider in Windows but that does not solve the core issue for me with it. So ability to change it to something more pleasant would be very nice.
Maybe something like this can be added: http://i.imgur.com/OmppfhG.png
Please add change a sound, I hearing one the same sound about a year. It's so annoying. I'm already hate it)
⬆️
I support this feature. Even the terrible web client has a volume control setting for notifications:
Please add it. :)
Well, if in 3 years it's still not implemented, might aswell use cutegram.
thanks for the tip with cutegram, definitly going to check that one out :)
@Bluscream Glad I could help someone.
Colleagues and I use Telegram channel as a aggregator. All ci/cd messages, all exceptions from prod fires in the channel. As a user I want to separate notifications from my job chats with real humans and from my job aggregator chat. It could be achieved by setting to the aggregator channel a special sound.
Oh, whoa. Apparently this has been essentially already implemented!
2. Type: **msg_incoming**
What the heck is this witchcraft? Indeed it works, but it's like entering a cheat code. No indication anything's happening until you type the last letter, and then the file dialog pops up. Couldn't they just, you know, add a visible menu item for this?
- Go to settings
Go to what settings? I don't have any search field in the main settings menu, and the 'cheat-code-like' style doesn't work too for me.

You open the sidebar in the telegram window, there is a "Settings" menu item there. You click it. Make sure that you have english keyboard layout on. Start typing "msg_incoming" as if you're typing a cheatcode. You'll see no change until you typed everything. When you're done - a default windows file selector will appear. Gosh, I don't even need this feature and it took me 10 sec to figure it out.
I would like to disable call notifications on desktop completely. Also, an option to only silence them would be nice!
Hey there!
This issue will be automatically closed in 7 days if there would be no activity. We therefore assume that the user has lost interest or resolved the problem on their own.
Don't worry though; if this is an error, let us know with a comment and we'll be happy to reopen the issue.
Thanks!
Yes, we still want it.
cheatcode not work in version from snapd, instead apt buster-backports
I ended up here trying to find a way to change notification sound in 2k21. Good job, Durov's team.
The feature is still highly wanted
Volume control for notifications and ringtones wanted baadly!
I'm perfectly happy with the default sound file -- it's non-intrusive, but notifications definitely need a general volume control!
It's especially needed when I'm watching movies/videos: I often have to crank the system volume up to hear the dialogue, and then BLAM!! a Telegram notification blasts my ears off. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
This is in Debian, using the official download for Linux (not Deb's outdated version from the repo).
@VanessaE You can change applications' sound volume in your operating system sound mixer. The reason why I might want to change the notifications sound is that it's getting used not only by the Telegram messenger. Some video bloggers or even websites not related to the Telegram are using it to attract your attention. It creates a disturbing sensation as if you received an important message, even though it is not. I tried to convince some video bloggers to stop using these sounds, but for some reason, they do not listen to the opinion of a single viewer.
@wheech-lv, I can't speak too much on what random vbloggers and such are doing in their videos, as I don't watch that sort of thing. That's merely a case of them misusing the program's sounds to mislead, and imho, that is entirely out of scope for this Issue. The loudness of live notification sounds coming from the user's actual desktop Telegram instance is a different matter.
Like most Linux users (I guess), my system relies on Pulseaudio, so per-program volume control is the norm... but that does no good here:
Like most, Telegram's notification sounds are short, and for some users, they're relatively infrequent as well, depending on how they use Telegram. Since Pulse's mixer only displays a volume control for only the couple of seconds it takes for the notification sound to finish, it's essentially impossible to turn Telegram's volume down.
Conversely, I could turn other programs' volumes up until Telegram seems comparatively quiet, but then the system is amplifying digitally, which means sooner or later one of those programs' audio will start hard-clipping, trashing the quality and forcing me to turn everything back down. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, tossed it in a fire the same day. :stuck_out_tongue:
Perhaps the most appropriate solution is for Telegram to do whatever is needed to keep its volume control showing in Pulse's mixer. I guess this would mean just keeping an audio stream open at all times, and using that to play all sounds as needed.
Oh, whoa. Apparently this has been essentially already implemented!
1. Go to settings 2. Type: **msg_incoming** 3. Choose your desired notification sound 4. Restart the client. 🎉
Please note that while it does work, tdesktop normalizes (makes as loud as possible without clipping) whatever sound you give it, so you can't make the notification sound quieter this way.
Still actual. Loud notifications are highly annoying, meanwhile I don't wanna to reduce volume for whole Telegram via Windows sound mixer. To lower it for notifications only, but I can't, there's no option.
after 3.6.3 sounds can be changed on more easy way.
Almost 6 years later... and still this functionality is missing (I mean... being able to change the notification volume) :-(
I kind of needed this in countless occasions. Some voice messages are too quiet sometimes, so I have to crank up Telegram's volume from the Window's volume mixer, and it affects it all. The next notification will be a pain in the ass, specially if you are still listening to quiet voice messages, videos, ... The only solution I have is to mute the notifications.

btw it also works for call sounds - just type call_incoming instead
FYI, in the current version we have a GUI setting in Notifications and Sounds so there's no longer any need to type a magic cheat code. It also appears to play at the desired volume (doesn't normalize the sample) so that's good. You can also set a different sound per chat.
There doesn't appear to be an option for the call sound yet, so this issue is almost done.
Still no volume control option, for me it is like 5 times louder than it should be
Hi I'd really appreciate volume control for notifications still. This can't be such a difficult issue that it still isn't implemented after 9 years right????
Still no update in 2023 to separate the volumes of calls, notifications, media + streams.
thanks for the tip with cutegram, definitly going to check that one out :)
64gram is now my prefered way
+1 would be great!
Yes please. I adjust via volume mixer . But telegram uses the same audio stream for both notifications and calls. If i cant hear the call i have to bump up the volume. But if I forget to set it back i get blasted when i get a new notificaiton
This demand is still valid. The notification volume is way too high on the desktop app and there is no way to turn it down without turning all sounds down on Telegram.
Hi all, telegram has a specific sound for notifications and calls. At times it's ok, at others it's loud and not so helpful. It would be nice if we were able to specify our own sounds (or music pieces or whatever) and it would play them to notify whenever a new message comes.
Similarly, the notifications have a certain volume for which one has to constantly change the speaker volume so it doesn't disturb people at times. It would be nice if there was some sort of UI within telegram itself which would take care of it.
