Please add feature to leave groups without delete history #5726

Open Croydon opened 5 years ago

Croydon commented 5 years ago

Steps to reproduce

  1. Be in a group with messages/history
  2. Leave it
  3. Notice that the history is gone, since there is only a "delete and exit" feature

Expected behaviour

Add a exit group feature WITHOUT deleting the history

Configuration

Operating system: Windows

Version of Telegram Desktop: 1.5.15

As a temporary workaround: The Android "Plus Messenger" allows to do this. The history stays in the Telegram cloud and is accessible with all Telegram clients afterwards.

Turn the group into a supergroup.

@Edicksonjga leaving/being removed from a supergroup deletes its history

Hey there!

This issue will be automatically closed in 7 days if there would be no activity. We therefore assume that the user has lost interest or resolved the problem on their own.

Don't worry though; if this is an error, let us know with a comment and we'll be happy to reopen the issue.

Thanks!

Hi! This is my generic reply for every issue which is still relevant and is on the edge of getting closed by a stale bot.

Hello ...May I know how to keep the history in the phone or desktop before leaving the group? is the issue solved? Is plus messenger to fix this issue ? If yes, may i know how to fix this? thx

RememberTheAir commented 3 years ago

@hweontey there are currently two/three ways to do that:

On all official apps, leaving a group also means deleting the chat history. IMPORTANT: the methods I've just described only work with normal groups. In fact, there is no way to leave a supergroup without loosing the chat history.

Anyway, before leaving the group, you can always export it using Telegram Desktop

piegamesde commented 3 years ago

you can use Telegram Web: open the group's members list, find your account in the list, hover on it with the mouse and use the "leave" option that will appear. This way you'll retain the history

The "leave" button you claim to have is called "Delete and exit" for me, so that's probably won't work (and I definitely won't try it).

Has anyone experimented with leaving groups over a Matrix bridge? Maybe if the bridge also does chat backfilling, you'd leave the group and keep the history on Matrix. (This issue is a good reminder that it's time to ditch Telegram)

Yes you are right, they probably changed it and I didn't notice
