This feature request still makes sense if you have a few junky channel folders that you aren't actively looking in.

I'm very interested and couldn't resolve this problem on my own 'cause I'm not a C programmer. Sorry, bot
1 Year and 5 month later... and still we wait for this enhancement... It's very important for people to have distraction control. Please make telegram a distraction-free social media.
I agree there should be such an option, but if it's been 1 year and half, it's clear that telegram doesn't want to introduce this setting :(
Btw, Kotatogram is a fork of tdesktop which offers an option to disable these counters (and also disable the folders name so you only see the icon)
What is the current status on this?
@cosmicog telegram desktop is not going to add this as long as the other official clients don't introduce such an option (and we don't know whether Telegram is planning to add it or not, most likely not)
Is your feature request related to a problem?
Yes, it's directly linked to the bug in human's code which makes you draw attention to unread indicators and in some cases causes real anxiety that you are missing something out and makes you go read whatever is marked unread.
Describe the solution you'd like
Unread indicators should be configurable per folder basis, and what I mean is not global indicator that we used to see when our app is minimized, but the indicators on the folders.
Just a toggle that allows us to hide these indicators on some folders, simple as that. So you never see any ⑦ indicators on your “Memes” folder, because memes aren't that important, but your sanity is.
Describe alternatives you've considered
Excluding read channels or chats. That may work, but sometimes you just want to switch to that other chat you received notification from and then return back to the channel to maybe share that ahaha funny picture, but sadly it's no longer in the folder and you don't really looked at the name and forgot what channel it was, going searching each meme channel you have (dozens) and… It's just doesn't worth it.
Fixing that bug in human's code. But unfortunately, evolution or the god(s), decided that humans are going be run by proprietary code, and reverse engineering it, then creating a patch, may take up some time. So I don't see it as a very viable alternative any soon.
