@afong3 We have 1TB free on OneDrive through UBC. Should we just that? It may be that I need to set it up, but I could do that.... I just want to make sure it will share well with you and others before I do.
@lizzieinvancouver 1TB for free to start sounds great. If we need more we can probably top up somehow. At the very least we'll be able to test if OneDrive does everything we need it to do.
@afong3 I set up a folder and wrote an email (which I will send later today) to try to make sure uploaded images end up owned by me or the lab ... will let you know what i hear. Once we decide we're happy with OneDrive someone should remind me to add @wangxm-forest and @christophe-rd to the folder. Thanks!
Also, don't forget to submit receipts for cloud storage fees you have for reimbursement. They cannot go on the equipment grant but they can go on another (the one that starts with N), drop by my office or email me if you don't know it.
Working on figuring out how I can be owner of files uploaded to folder on OneDrive. I emailed Norm and he wrote:
I don't know if this is good enough. https://ubc.service-now.com/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0018195 It looks a bit tedious, but maybe not so bad if the files are large and therefore fewer.
Contact https://it.ubc.ca/selfservice and ask if there's a better way for you to take ownership. If students are sharing files from their OneDrive, then the instructions at the link may be the only way.
So I just submitted a ticket with the following:
How to make sure I own all files uploaded to a folder?
I am trying to use OneDrive for a bunch of tree core images my lab is producing. I want the images to be owned by me so they don't disappear with my students (and so they count against my 1 TB max). I set up the folder, but the uploader person owns the images -- is there a workaround for this (without me personally uploading all the images, which is not feasible as there will be hundreds of large images; I found this https://ubc.service-now.com/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0018195 which is also not feasible). If OneDrive is not the way to do this and some other method (Teams) would work, please let me know.
@lizzieinvancouver Have you heard anything back about the ticket?
@lizzieinvancouver I pestered @afong3 for the cloud storage because yesterday the drive I use to store ALL the scans was corrupted (450gb). I could recover everything but that gave me a fright. I'll back them up automatically on two drives, but storing them on the cloud would be great.
That brings another issue potentially problematic: moving heavy files from 3 different exploitation systems (Linus, Windows, Mac). I personally know nothing about this, but I read it can be a problem and just wanted to raise a flag.
@lizzieinvancouver there is no rush. I backed up all the files to my own UBC OneDrive account (temporarily).
For convenience and data sharing, it is important to store the data from Tina on the cloud. Ideally we don't need to share the same account between people but that is an option if we don't have the budget to expand to more than one person. It's a bit difficult to say which is better/worse at the cost difference of $10 per year. Any thoughts or preferences on what to choose?
