This weekend, we’ll find out the identity of Sheynnis Palacios’s successor as Miss Universe, as the beauty pageant’s grand final takes place in Mexico City. Before then, however, the 2024 contest’s record 127 participants must negotiate Thursday’s preliminary competition, from which 30 delegates will advance to Saturday’s final show.

Who chooses the Miss Universe grand final qualifiers? During the prelims in the Mexican capital, the Miss Universe selection committee will choose 29 of the 30 semi-finalists who are to advance to the weekend’s main event, including four continental queens (for Latin America and the Caribbean; Europe; Africa; and Asia and Oceania). The remaining qualifier for the grand final will be decided by a fan vote.

The pageant’s organisers have revealed that there will be no evening gown competition in Thursday’s prelims; delegates will only parade in swimsuits and national costumes. In the grand final, the top 30 will then be reduced to 12, who will take to the stage in evening dress. Five finalists will then compete in a question-and-answer round, with the winner of this Q&A declared the new Miss Universe.

In the United States, the Miss Universe preliminary competition will be broadcast by the free-to-air Spanish-language network Telemundo today, November 14, from 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. According to the broadcaster, viewers will be able to follow the event live on the Telemundo app, Telemundo.com/MissUniverso, Telemundo’s YouTube channel, and the broadcaster’s Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok accounts.

English-language coverage of the prelims is available on the Miss Universe Organization’s YouTube channel, but it is for members only. To access this content, you will need a ‘VIP Emerald’ or ‘VIP Diamond’ subscription to the channel, at a cost of $19.99/month and $29.99/month, respectively.

Like the grand final, the preliminary competition is to be held at Mexico City’s 22,000-capacity Arena Ciudad de México, with former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo and TV presenter Mario Lopez the hosts.
