subtitles revert to two second intervals when reopening? #41

Open pacohatley opened 2 months ago

pacohatley commented 2 months ago

When I save my .srt and reopen the subtitles revert to even two-second intervals on the timecode. Only happens with certain videos and appears to be random. Please help!

can you provide more info on this? Like add the subtitle file?

pacohatley commented 2 months ago

thanks for getting back to me. uploading the two .srt files that I've been experiencing this problem with... Archive.zip

teras commented 2 months ago

Is looks like, the file wasn't saved as SRT or ASS or SSA (or any other format). Only as plain file. If you change the extension to .txt and open it in a random editor, you'll see what I mean.

Does this happen for all files, or only for this?

pacohatley commented 2 months ago

Thanks — it has only happened with these two files out of 60-70. I’m working with a translator who sends me the completed .srt files — he says that when he saves and reopens the files the time code spacing revert to even intervals every three seconds.

The person who saved it did something wrong

When files like this open, they get a constant duration since there's no information about where to place the subtitle.

pacohatley commented 2 months ago

Any idea of what they could’ve done wrong?

If this is the only file, then maybe accidentally saved it as text instead. They might selected the wrong output.

If it is on all files, maybe a broken installation? But that isn't really likely.

Two files — any way to revert back to the original intervals for the subs? He’d finished the whole sequence. Or is the damage permanent… On Sat, Sep 7, 2024 at 10:33 AM Panayotis @.***> wrote:

The damage is permanent. As you saw the file doesn't have this information at all.

At the end of the day, SRT files are just plain text files with special tags. In the version that you sent me, these tags are gone forever

teras commented 2 months ago

I did but now the image is gone and I don't remember it

pacohatley commented 2 months ago

Brutal. Ok. Thanks.

Hi there -- wanted to follow up about this.

I did but now the image is gone and I don't remember it

Here's the link, working again: https://vimeo.com/1004538133?share=copy

The problematic files had "presegmented text" in their names when opened in Jubler e.g., "PreSegmentedText - Users/..."

Does that provide clues for anyone on how to fix this maybe?

teras commented 2 months ago

In the video that you send me, there's no 2-second gap. I am confused. What should I look at?

pacohatley commented 2 months ago

Hi teras, if you watch to the end of the video you'll see that he saves and closes the file with the correct timecodes. It reverts when he reopens the file...

pacohatley commented 2 months ago

Hi Teras,

Did you rewatch the video for reference? Sorry to keep bugging you about this.

teras commented 2 months ago

Unfortunately the videos don't help. As I told you, the subtitle you sent didn't have any timings on it. Thus it is obvious that, when loaded, it won't have any timings either.

How did you save it? That's the main reason. If you saved it improperly the timings won't be there. Even if you change the name to "ass", if you select the wrong type it will be the wrong type.
