There is a somewhat cohesive vision for where we're going- long-run- with this Tessel project. It has to do with changing the way hardware is built in the future. Essentially, we have several specific ideas to apply web paradigms and lessons learned in the programming and open source communities to hardware design practices.
This vision has been discussed in the steering committee, but hasn't yet been well articulated or made generally transparent. This is partly because it's complicated, partly because it's not all neatly worked out, and partly because we haven't had a chance to write about it yet.
