Need option to provide a URL as dowload link in projects page #3

For example here: http://beta.thamizha.com/content/e-kalappai

we have a download link. This points to a file in our server. We should have an option to provide URL also.

We need to keep all downloads in one place to better control the files. Also to track the number of downloads. We can use the github download feature to upload our files and track them.

SuganthiVenkatesh commented 12 years ago

Also we need to give instructions as to how to install the software on the different divices. In windows 7 I have to do lot of work arounds for ealappai 3 to work.

ravi-sam commented 12 years ago

@mugunth, yes, a download URL can be added. Also, the downloads count is available if the file is downloaded from our server.

@SuganthiVenkatesh, I can add another field such as 'Installation instructions'. Will that be ok?

SuganthiVenkatesh commented 12 years ago

Yes the installation instructions fiels dhould have some FAQS about the problems the user might face and how to solve them.

mugunth commented 12 years ago

@SuganthiVenkatesh FAQ is another requirement. Please create a new bug for it.

@ravi-sam Yes please add a field for installation instructions. If we could track the number of downloads it should fine. I am still not sure whether we should keep all files in github downloads area and provide link from here or to have the downloadable files in our server itself.

Please let me know your opinion on that.

@mugunth,

"I am still not sure whether we should keep all files in github downloads area and provide link from here or to have the downloadable files in our server itself."

I think it maybe useful to provide the stable versions of all products on our server. Git repos are likely to be work in progress, with some untested / not thoroughly tested code. Also, the # of downloads can be tracked in Drupal, if hosted on our server.

mugunth commented 12 years ago

Yes agreed.

Lets maintain all the downloads in our server itself. So we can use the existing download option in the project page.

We might need to refine that little bit, but i hope we can do that once we go live and start using.

There were four things at the home page. Tamil Keyboard information: E-kalappai is an open source keyboard manager. It helps to type tamil in windows computers. Using ekalappai, you can type tamil in any application using keyboards of your choice.

e-Kalappai supports various keyboards layouts to type tamil.

Currently following keyboards are supported:

Tamil99, Phonetic,Typewriter,Bamini,Inscript. Right now this will work in windows 7 version. Older versions of window users can also download the earlier version which helps you to type in True Type font.The new version helps the user to type in Tamil Unicode. We are also have Keyboard for android operating system,called Tamil visai.

For spell check:our spell check works as an extension with Firefox internet browser. Once you install this in your browser you can check tamil spelling mistakes in your email text box.This works only in a browser. In future we will have them available for other applications as well Tamil Fonts: compare to English language fonts our Language has very limited number of font types. We are working on providing more Tamil fonts that will work with windows computer. Right now we have (need the fonts that come with e-kallappai) included our fonts with the e-kalapai software Tamil Grammar Parser: I have no idea what it does. This is very basic information. Are we providing installing information on the software

@SuganthiVenkatesh,

You may add the content provided above, at the following link: http://beta.thamizha.com/ I think you have the admin access, am I correct?

Btw, There is no Tamil Grammar parser. It was just a dummy entry for wireframing purposes.

SuganthiVenkatesh commented 12 years ago

I think I do have the login info. Can you tell me if there is any other information needs to be added. Also what other project we should put instead of grammer parser. Can I have the list of fonts that we provide with ekallappai Also With the new Ekallapai we cannot type in ASCII font format right. Only in unicode right?

SuganthiVenkatesh commented 12 years ago

Also can we have a brief discription of keyboard. RIght now I use the Phonetic. So I can start creating a user guide. But I do not know how other keyboard works. So let me know how to create the user guide for the keyboards. I can create the userguide for spell checker, and installing the fonts seperatly in the mean time. This will take some time as I am taking classes. Thanks

ravi-sam commented 12 years ago

I request @mugunth / @askalot / @tecoholic to answer these, as I do not have sufficient info myself.

@SuganthiVenkatesh,

Until then, you may add whatever content you can add to the beta site, and let me know if you face any issues.
