Usually, if a message is printed when moving to another room there is a blank line before the room description. Here are the messages when leaving The Chamber of Ra, if you've tied one end of the rope to the altar and holding the other end:
>UP
You release the free end of the rope as you walk.
Desert
You are in the desert at a site of successful excavation. Beneath you lies the
pyramid, its stone door at last open. The desert is all around you, but down
there lie the secrets of the ages.

>SOUTH
(down the winding staircase)
You release the free end of the rope as you walk.
South Landing
You are on a landing in the middle of a set of stairs. The staircase goes down
to the south and up to the north. The walls here are undistinguished, formed by
the stones of which the pyramid was built.
This is printed by TELL-STAIRS-FCN.
Oddly enough, TELL-STAIRS-FCNdoes put a blank line before the room description if you walk east or west. (Both with and without the rope.)
