If you try to set the timber frame in WEST-END_OF-PASSAGE, there are a couple of different messages explaining how you "plummet downard to darkness" or fall "into the darkness below". But unless you've removed the plaster, there's no explanation that I can see for how there is anything to fall into at all.
But the function does check if you're on the beam or not, and if you've removed the plaster I don't think you can ever not be on beam.
