The dial should probably only be visible from one side of the door #34

>LOOK
Shaft Bottom
You are at the bottom of an air shaft which looks climbable. A heavy door leads
west.
Lying in one corner is a coil of rope.

>EXAMINE DOOR
Set in the door is a large circular dial which can be set to any number up to
873. It is currently set to 744.

>TURN DIAL
You can't see any dial here!

That's because DIAL-DOOR is local global to both DIAL-ROOM and SHAFT-BOTTOM, while DIAL is only in DIAL-ROOM.

I think what would make the most sense would be if DIAL-DOOR-F only showed the dial when you're in DIAL-ROOM. This is what it currently coes:

           (<VERB? EXAMINE>
        <PERFORM ,V?EXAMINE ,DIAL>
        <RTRUE>)

Similarly, the sign is visible from both sides of the door. The sign isn't a separate object. Instead, DIAL-DOOR has READBIT and TEXT, and one of its synonyms is "SIGN".
