Similarly...
>TAKE WET OVERCOAT
You are now carrying the wet overcoat.
>EXAMINE IT
In the coat is a label which reads "Lord and Taylor" and underneath that in sewn
script, "Alicia Barron."
>TAKE LABEL
You can't take the label.
>DROP LABEL
Okay, the label is now on the floor.
>LOOK
East Coat Closet
This is a large coat closet full of rather damp coats, overcoats, and raincoats.
There's a label here.
There's a reporter's overcoat here.
>EXAMINE WET COAT
In the coat is a label which reads "Lord and Taylor" and underneath that in sewn
script, "Alicia Barron."
The LABEL
object is inside ALICIA-COAT
, but can be dropped even though it cannot be taken.
Here's another one, LIQUID
:
>EXAMINE GLASS
This is a large fragment of broken glass from a highball glass. There is a film
of red liquid on the inside.
>EXAMINE LIQUID
This seems to be the remains of Veronica's drink.
>DROP LIQUID
Okay, the liquid is now on the floor.
The glass is still described as having a film of liquid, even though it's no longer in the glass. Obviously you shouldn't be able to drop it like this.
Another one, VERONICA-HAIR
:
>TAKE CORPSE
Taken, but the body is heavy. As you move the body a small object drops to the
floor beneath it.
>DROP VERONICA'S HAIR
Okay, Veronica's hair is now on the floor.
Throwing works just as well, but putting it in a container apparently doesn't.
This bug took me by surprise, because that was one of the bugs mentioned in the "They're Never Satisfied" article that appeared in the Fall 1984 edition of The New Zork Times. I always assumed that it was fixed before release.
I've seen a couple of similar bugs in other games, where an object contains one or more non-takeable parts that you can drop. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy used
INTEGRALBIT
to mark them as not droppable, but that feature didn't seem to catch on.
