Title

Case Studies and Best Practices in Academic-Industry Collaboration

Guide

Guide for Collaboration

Draft

https://github.com/f-rower/the-turing-way/tree/Case-Studies-and-Best-Practices-in-Academic-Industry-Collaboration/book/website/collaboration/academic-industry

Summary of proposed chapter

In its present form, the chapter on Academic-Industry Collaborations could benefit from the addition of a further sub-chapter, tentatively titled “Case Studies and Best Practices in Academic-Industry Collaboration” focused on best-practices, lessons learnt, and case studies in successfully shaping ad navigating Academia-Industry collaboration for Open Science. The vision for this sub-chapter is to become a continuously updated database of academic-industry collaboration case studies that future researchers can reference.

A balance must be struck between producing research that is directly useful for the sponsoring organisation and producing research that is open, shareable, and beneficial to the larger community. This tension is tricky to navigate and shape, both for new and seasoned researchers. Therefore, researchers championing Open Science would benefit from lessons learnt and case studies from other researchers who successfully and/or unsuccessfully navigated this aspect of Academic-Industry collaborations.

Please consider a recent report by Catapult Energy Systems Data Science: From Academia to Industry. Indeed, Energy Systems is one of the experts in residence of the Practitioners Hub.

Regarding the case studies we publish under this sub-chapter. We can keep in mind the following audiences:

  • Academic Organisations/Departments Want to create a continuous pathway for academics to interacting with industry partner. Wants to learn how to generate opportunities for engagement on both sides, scale collaborations and create sustainability around the collaboration partner. Interested in:

    • Strategies for establishing and growing collaborative networks
    • Designing programs that bridge organizational boundaries.

    Target Case study:

    • Turing-Roche case study
  • Newcomers to Industry Collaboration: Academics wanting to start collaborating with industry. Interested in:

    • Identify potential industry partners
    • Initial outreach
    • Common terms and expectations
    • Understanding industry goals & ways of working
  • Engagement-ready Academics: Has a potential collaboration partner identified and understand their goals & ways of working but wants to make sure the collaboration will be impactful and wants to avoid common pitfalls. Interested in:

    • Potential challenges or strategies for conflict resolution
    • Management of ongoing collaborations
    • Alignment with industry long-term goals
    • Develop trust with collaboration partner
    • Administrative support structures

These have now been incorporated into the introduction of the subchapter
