Update documentation files in the project root #38

Outdated or redundant information has been removed, some useful new information has been added. The Markdown files now all start with the same hyperlink. Especially the Readme has been rigorously rewritten.

Feedback would be very much appreciated.

Seven days have passed, two people have expressed their approval on the IRC channel (edit: and one in the forum thread). I'm now going to integrate the branch (manually, because it can't be done automatically).
