Eg bouldering, trad, ice, ....

This will give the system a hint for which grading system to present things.

Is this conceptually correct, or do we actually want people to choose a country context, similar to how we internally set a context for a country? ie If I was french, and looking at Australia, I might want the climbing grades converted to french climbing grades but the V grades converted to Font bouldering grades. I would definitely not want an ice climbing grade to get translated into a ewbank grade, or via ferrata into a bouldering grade.

Overlapping requirements. This one is more for the Australian climber who wants to set their profile to Ewbanks or V grades. At the moment the system will automatically decide the default based on the most ascents, but we have at least one user who still wants to be recognized as a trad climber even though he has just recently done lot's of bouldering which has switched the profile style to V grades.

Maybe this is more about preferred climbing style. I will change the title to reflect this.

This still feels like something isn't right. A bouldering grade should never get transformed into an iceclimbing grade, or a via ferrata grade. There seems to be two types of things that a user would want to do with their profile, 1) is convert their ticks into something more familiar, so a country context (as above), AND 2) potentially filter their core stats to only show particular gear styles. A trad climber who has onsighted 22 and V6, but wants to show trad grades, I would think would expect to see 22 and not whatever V6 translates into (25/26)

I agree. While this was not so clear when it was mainly trad climbing ticks with the odd boulder, now that we are really pushing for getting different types of climbers we need clearer separation. It is very obvious we do not want to convert trad to ice climbing. There are some other more subtle issues such as how to deal with aid climbing, as it usually has both an aid and trad component.

On the whole I think we should separate the following:

BTW, the skiing is tongue in cheek- it is not on my list of activities to include in ones logbook.

The profile filter now gives the user the opportunity to set indoor/outdoor or trad/sport/boulder ...
