Old South African grades don't interpret aid grades correctly #3145

When using South African grades and entering grades that include aid, the grade is misinterpreted. For example "F1 A0" and "F1 A4" is correctly interpreted but "F1 A1" is not. This is probably because A1, A2, and A3 are grades at the bottom-end of the old SA scale.

This also does not work for new SA grades + aid for example "17 A1" is also misinterpreted.

For example see routes in area: https://www.thecrag.com/climbing/south-africa/hanglip-south/area/1751196375

Old SA grade C is a scramble mostly done without gear. I doubt you will ever see B and lower grade in route description. I have not seen any description that uses a number when describing pitches of grade C, numbers are commonly omitted up to grade D. An optional workaround is therefore to assume "A" followed by a number is always aid.

This might take a while to get to. @fpieterse can you please just throw in links where this is wrong when you come across them. Just copy the links into this discussion. This will give us an idea of how many routes are effected.

In the meantime there is a work around for inputing grades. If you want to force the aid grading system then use AID:A1 when typing in the grade.

F1 AID:A1

There are many routes with aid pitches in that specific area (Hanglip). I think it is because the crag has very obscure access issues and not many people get there. Most of the routes were opened in the 70s. I'm sure most have been free climbed but we just don't have a record of it. For Hanglip I will be able to enter the grades as you suggested (e.g. F1 AID:A1). I will put links here if I find examples in any other areas.

Thanks.
