This has been very helpful to me when bisecting toolchains, but I only discovered the option by reading through the source of the repo tool.

Upstream meaning to the repo tool?

The -m flag is documented as initial manifest file but doesn't detail its usage (at least not that I could see). But really, this is more about discovery of this useful flag.
