Remove borders from Poggendorf images (and improve resolution if possible) #62

From @rabarth1

I’m working on Renate Poggendorf’s essay in first pages right now, and was reminded that she originally submitted her images in Excel and had been in contact with Clare about us making some refinements to her images and increasing their resolution. Clare told her we could do this if she submitted in Excel. Mostly she wants the faint borders around her images deleted and some of them enlarged, and the resolution increased on all.

From @geealbers

The Poggendorf images are all around 3000px wide, so I’m not sure what more we could do as far as resolution. We can remove the faint borders though. And If there are some that need to be 2-colums on the PDF page but aren’t already we can do that too.

@geealbers @Erin-Cecele did you see Molly's recent email about reworking some of the Poggendorf images? She sent a possible solution.

I believe these images have been fixed by Molly and uploaded to the server as SVG files. They are in the folder New Since Transmitta_03.15.2023. @geealbers do you need to do anything to these images before I add them in?

From Molly:

It looks like I can resave these as separate images pretty easily. The data comes through very cleanly if I save them as svg files and open them in illustrator. Greg, my understanding is that would work well for online images, but am I remembering correctly that there were issues if that files type was exported to PDF for printing? If that is the case would you have a recommendation for how we save these?

Greg to Molly:

Yes, if you’re able to export to SVG, we can work with that for sure. I might end up having to convert to PNG for our PDF output (as you recalled correctly there were some issues previously) but I won’t know that for sure until the book is back on my desk and I’ve started working on it again, after Diane gets the corrections done.

I've created a folder in the repo called poggendorf_images and in that folder I saved all the .SVG files from the server as .PNG files. I wasn't sure what the best method for cropping out the borders is, especially since some of the borders are very close to the text.
