Initial Markdown Conversions Comments #1

The initial conversions to markdown for essays 13, 16, 17–18 are complete. Some general issues to be aware of when converting further essays are: 1) the copyeditor has created very long file names and the command line doesn't like them. I resaved the files simply by the author's last name prior to markdown conversion. 2) In two essays (17 and 18), the footnotes were formatted only as superscripts, not as "real" footnotes and these required correction in Markdown. This may happen in other essays. 3) Headings are styled inconsistently in these essays and it's not indicated whether headings are A, B or C-level heads. One essay had the A-heads in Roman font with no formatting, another had them in italics. (I removed the italics in MS Word prior to conversion). With these short posters, it wasn't much of an issue. However, this may be more problematic on the longer essays in part one. 4) In the case of multipart figures (i.e., fig 18.2a and b), we only refer to the first part when adding the link. i.e., (figs. 18.2a and b). An exception to this occurs in essay 17 which has a few multi-part figures which are not cited at the same time. Rather, one sentence will refer to 17.2a in one sentence, 17.2b a sentence or two later. Thus, I added a link for each individual component. This may need further tweaking. 5) There were multiple cases of cross-references to other essays in this volume. I checked VHM and the correct style for this is (see Mazurek in this volume)

Issues in this individual essays:

1) Essay 13: there is a Greek character, an iota, and I am not sure it is formatting properly. It occurs three times and in MS Word looks like this: Sarap[i]on. Also, the author used "Ibid" for note 6. This is not advised by Chicago and I changed it to reflect the short citation. Be on the lookout for the dreaded Ibid in future essays.

2) Essay 16: within the body of the text, there is a list of 4 items that describe findings related to the numbers 1–4 on figure 16.3 (these numbers label strata in a cross-sectional image). I am not sure this will format properly. It may also be better as a figure caption? Also, this chapter has no notes or citations.

3) Essay 17: footnote formatting was corrected. Also, note the multipart figures. Finally, I can't get the cross-reference in note 5 to format properly.

4) Essay 18: footnote formatting was corrected. Note the multipart figures. Note call-out for table to be inserted.
