hi @stellasilbert

Currently the data coding shet for parlametrics is an XLSX file (or excel file) stored on google drive.

It would be helpful if we could convert this to a google sheets file.

This is straightforward to do, but I wanted to check with you whether there was any reason not to do it?

e.g. are you editing the excel file offline and updating it? Or is the excel file updated outside of google drive at all?

No there's no reason it needs to be an xlsx file. I think it's just like that because I started from an older excel sheet that I had imported into google sheets. But I only ever work on it in google sheets, not doing any outside editing.

I converted all to google sheets files and deleted the xlsx files. For some reason I can't "close" this thread or the others but consider it closed.

Cool thanks Stella.

For some reason I still couldnt get it to work with the converted file, but it does work if I made a copy of the file. I think this is some kind of hangover from the conversion but not 100% why the conversion doesn't immediately work.

Do you think it will be fine for me to make copies and delete the originals in of the necessary files?

I also recently learnt that the website is drawing from these googlesheets - do yo know the email of the person dealing with them so I can ask whether these changes might affect the website?

I think making copies and deleting the originals is fine. For these non-Cantometrics datasets, no one has really been editing them besides me.

The email for John Szinger, who is developing the website, is john@zingman.com. Not sure if he's done anything with the non-Canto datasets because they are not currently on the website, but definitely would be good to keep him updated on any changes you are making to the cultures and Cantometrics metadata and data sheets.

Also, I have been tracking my changes on this sheet, which I sent in response to Patrick's email as well. I know these threads keep a record of it on github as well but I assume it is easier for John to see them all in one place and not have to read through all the text of the threads.
