Hello Thomas, i tried contacting you on protonmail but no response, so i have created my GitHub account just for contacting you

https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2271042-my-wd-external-hd-enclosure-failed-how-do-i-access-th

I'm going through a similar issue like this above thread

MY WD My Book is not turning on anymore, i have successfully removed the drive out of the enclosure, Purchased SATA to USB Connector and connected the drive to Windows 8.1, The drive Shows up on the Disk Management but as "Not Initialized"

https://github.com/themaddoctor/linux-mybook-tools/blob/master/Mounting%20encrypted%20WD%20disks%20in%20linux.pdf

As per the above thread and GitHub documentation, i can see my chip is JMicron JMS538S

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLsqwIkb1l4

Can you please confirm that

  1. Whether this methods will work if linux is used via oracle VM ?
  2. Which distro i should use ?
  3. Does Linux detect External HDD's while its connected via VM on windows PC Host ?

i also have no experience in installing/using linux, i really need your help friend

Thank you.

sorry if my English isn't good enough, my 1st language is Tamil.

on a positive note, Bitlocker has not been activated also i have never used any wd softwares in my lifetime to enable password protection.... the drive is in completely unlocked state, it's just i am not able to access it due to hardware encryption...

i am only looking forward to recover the data out of my drive, Besides that, if the drive cant be used as regular sata drive on windows using sata to usb connector, im completely fine with that, i just need the data back, i have also purchased a new 5 TB drive to recover all the data from my current inaccessible 3 TB drive.

Thank you so much for creating this document, it just gave me a huge boost in my confidence that someday in the near future that i can somehow get my data back and its not permanently lost.. i just need to find someone who can use linux like a pro just as you, with your co-operation i will be able to get the data quickly.

Hope i will get positive response from you. Thanks again

Sorry it took so long to reply, but protonmail did not update my inbox for over a week.

I do not know if this will work in Oracle VM. You will definitely need to be able to use the USB ports in the virtual machine so that you can see the disk with the SATA-USB adapter. I believe this should be possible. My VirtualBox application allows it.

I suggest using Ubuntu, since it is a simple distribution to use. I still have Ubuntu 14.04, so if you get a newer one, I might not know all the details of how it works.

Once you get that working, see if you can get the keyblock, per the instructions in the PDF document.

BTW, there is no message from you in my protonmail inbox.

P.S. If it works, would you please post the keyblock and sector 0? sudo dd if=/dev/sd[whatever] count=1 | hexdump -C
