" Say adding the builder metabox to the actual 'edit page/post' page... and maybe even bring in metaboxes for the custom sidebars floating and fixed."
The builder meta box should be able to be added to the actual post/page edit toolbar.
See how wp-bakery does it here... http://codecanyon.net/item/visual-composer-for-wordpress/242431/?ref=mixey Demo: http://demo.wpbakery.com/vc/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fdemo.wpbakery.com%2Fvc%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1 (user name and pass are both "demo" )
You edit the layout on the actual post edit screen.
I have always imagined that as the framework matured this would be a natural next step for the builder to evolve to.
Wow is that your site? That is exactly what I was trying to describe. As always, your 10 steps ahead of me. Makes it hard for me to actually provide any helpful advice lol...
btw my email address is imtiedup@hotmail.com we were talking a bit on wpmu about server optimization. I'm at the end of a 30hr day, so to tired now, but would love to chat more. I finally got all 300k forum posts imported into my multi-db multisite setup, so now ready for server tweaking cache etc... (sorry to sidetrack the ticket, wasn't sure how else to get you my email in private, I'll erase this part once we touch base)
Oh wow, I didn't even realize that was you on WPMU dev, that's awesome.
Ahhh you're ShawnG aren't you?? Lol I just now put that together! That's cool.
not for here
You'll get an e-mail from me later and I'll fill you in... Thanks for the heads up.
Wow is that your site?
Not WP-Bakery if that's what you are talking about, and I hope you haven't confused me with the other Jason. :)
I have http://city.cx http://green.cx(Outdated) and a slew of other sites. My upcoming plans are to make a child theme studio based around jumpstart on http://greenthe.me
@Larceniii No I wasn't mixing you up with another Jason, I was actually trying to get in touch where I could get you my email address so that we could chat about the server optimization. I didn't want to leave my email address out in public as I get enough spam already.
I'm in no way friends with him. Don't know him at all, just registered at the site there a few weeks ago.
I delivered a website to a client today based off of Jump-Start and I had a few observations from the point of view of a somewhat 'newbie' WordPress user.
Background: The client has used WordPress in the past on fairly basic levels. It was a father son team, so age probably 50 and 20ish, not exactly sure, definitely professional adults.
What I observed: I built a system where each main menu link represented a page, and each of those pages used a builder template. Each of those builder templates used both fixed and floating widget areas in combination with page content modules and some builder templates were a little more complex.
Right away it became rather confusing to the client on how/where to edit the content on a page. Like all normal WordPress users his first instinct was to go to the page and edit everything there.
However, because I was using a builder template to add additional content to the page, it became very confusing to him very quickly that some of the content on the page was indeed there to edit, and yet other content was in the builder module and yet further content was in widget areas.
Here is a screenshot showing what I am talking about http://awesomescreenshot.com/03aiwx305
I've just kind of noticed that because you have to edit the content in so many areas, that it is actually a little confusing for the average user to figure out.
In the end, the client was VERY happy with the power that Jump-Start offered him. He loved the fact that he could basically build any page layout he could dream up fairly simply. He was however quite confused and it did take me about 2 hrs on skype screen sharing to really get him comfortable enough to leave him alone with the site for the night.
Suggestions: Well I'm not sure it's really feasible, but if there were any possible way to allow the user to edit everything on one page that would help a lot. Say adding the builder metabox to the actual 'edit page/post' page... and maybe even bring in metaboxes for the custom sidebars floating and fixed.
I don't know... just bouncing ideas and I know you guys know more about this than I do as your used to dealing with customers already using the theme.
I see Jump-Start as a great developers tool for when I don't want to have to write a ton of code, but I could never see my mother trying to use this. Then again, she is probably not your target market.
I hope that maybe this long post will help in the future with something...
I absolutely love Jump-Start and have zero complaints with it. Just after today, I'd like to find a way to make it a little simpler for the new user to understand. I will definitely be making a bunch of really generic how-to vids for my customer so he has a refresher on what we talked about today.
