Depends on pull request #633 , please review and merge that first to make it easier to review this one

created alembic migration like #597

Looks good! Gimme a few days to merge this one in; I want to do an update on Monday so I'm not mucking around with breakages over the weekend, and I want to test the previous changes on live before I add these :)
