The Control Panel allows individual projects to choose a runtime channel preference only. This isn't really that helpful, as projects are likely to be spread across versions on the same channels, and thus has not helped fix the issue of having to manually swap the global preference.
Really, the global preferences should be second to project preferences, where currently the project preferences are secondary to the global ones, which offer worse control.
