As requested in #350

I based this on 2.1 since it doesn't break any current functionality

Please send this to 3.0. There would have been a 2.2 release for non-breaking features, but I canceled it because there wasn't enough to do.

NB - Patch releases are for bug fixes only and minor releases are for things like this, but the next release is major, so this will have to go into 3.0.
