Some people moving to membic have previously invested time in tracking links using some other mechanism. That mechanism may have failed because there was no associated reason why each link was memorable, or because a lack of other information eventually made access unwieldy.
Converting links into membics cannot be fully automated because a membic requires more user supplied data. However the conversion process can definitely be made easier. For example you might envision a browser plugin that would prompt to make membics out of bookmarks as you use them. Or even going the other way and making your membics available as bookmarks. If someone had a text file of links, perhaps exported from a spreadsheet or database query, these could be loaded as bookmarks and converted.
Currently, the workaround is to use the bookmarklet. You visit a link from whatever source, then select the bookmarklet to make a membic. Duplicates are avoided based on the link url.
