This is an interesting possibility; visual cues are always good. I wonder however if the icons should be linked somehow through the tags or categories, since they indicate important info that should be covered by that metadata anyway.

I also concerned, given the many kinds of events/datapoints we have, about: a) The ability to graphically represent them in a way that makes immediate sense. Events like transferring prisoners or the expulsion of students are especially hard to depict. b) Having too many kinds of icons so that the only way to see them on a map is through filtering.
