An interesting gem for the next meetup #40

Yesterday, I came across something which didn't even know that existed; Shoes, which is a GUI gem for ruby. I don't know if you have already presented it, but I think people will find this cool too. After its demonstration we could talk about cases that somebody would want to use it or its reliability etc...

There's also this book about it which is a pretty fun and fast read.

Fotis, thanks for the heads up!

Yes indeed it is one of the most interesting ones, especially for educational purposes.

It was extracted by another project named hackety-hack. made by a respected Rubyist named "_why" who...disappeared!

You can read more about this here : http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/05/15/why-a-tale-of-a-post-modern-genius/

"_why"'s main concern was how to teach programming to young people in a fun and simple way. That's why ( :-) ) he made "Hackety Hack".

Shoes was the underlying engine that drove the GUI.

Nowadays there is an effort for re-writing Shoes over JVM (JRuby) so that it is truly portable and future-proof. This project is "Shoes 4 : the next version of Shoes". It is still under development.

So, to conclude... It is sure an amazing piece of software but its history is even more amazing! And it is one of the easiest and funnest ways to learn Ruby and programming in general!

@kootoopas thank you very much for mentioning it and evoking pleasant memories of Ruby-childhood :-)

PS : We are always open to presentation proposals like this! Is there anyone interested in presenting it?

@xarisd You're welcome. :)

I just noticed that he is the author of "Nobody knows shoes", the book I mentioned. He seems like an interesting and artistic dude. If I knew ruby better, I'd be happy to give the presentation. Maybe if I get my hands dirty with it on vacation, I will.

:+1: @kootoopas

Remember...

You don't have to know something "good enough" to give a presentation.

You just have to be interested enough to get your hands dirty with it and then share your experience with all of us!

I mentioned Shoes once in a recent Rubyzino. Like @xarisd said, we are always open to presentations from the community. In fact, it's a nice way to help us rest a bit

petros commented 9 years ago

Also, not to be pedantic, but this discussion would be better off if it happened in thessrb/meetup

I totally agree with @xarisd and I strongly recommend @kootoopas to do it. Take your time (but not more than 2 months) and present it. Give the historic value of it. And remember that we are there not just to attend but to support... so do not worry.

:+1: on having @kootoopas present shoes. I'm curious to see how the new jRuby version works

kootoopas commented 9 years ago

:ok_hand: Okay, it's been settled then. I'll give the presentation in the upcoming meetup or the next. You have my word.
