Since this started in English and the relevant language discussion is still running I will go on contributing in English for this one.
So: I like the first and forth ones best.
The forth is more tiring to the (my) eyes but I like It's structure (i do hate the irregular sidebar though). The showcase in the first mockup is an interesting idea but i believe that if we are to host a showcase it should be "family" first ( gaudi, descraff, pabarcode, r2d2, etc ) and the rest of Ruby world later.
@theodorosploumis Wow! Nice work!
Here is my opinion:
@Drakevr good point about "family" first, but this can change easily (or even "celebrate" it in another region).
I think that Modestos (Kafes) would give great value if participated in this discussion. Anyone knows his username in github to mention him here?
I think it would be better to wait for more members to join this issue and give their opinion before doing any modifications on the designs.
@modkaffes we need your advice!
@theodorosploumis , I totally agree with you. I've already sent him a message on Twitter. He said he'll join the conversation.
I'm with @xarisd, I'd like to somehow combine 1st and 3rd. Actually I'm leaning more towards the 3rd because it is less busy.
I'd like to see a version using the white background logo & generally using a white background. The large red background is somehow too heavy for my taste.
I like the alpha'ed photo as a watermark and I would take the small footer from number 4 instead of the footer from number 3.
Nice work btw. :)
@theodorosploumis great job on laying the groundwork!
However, as much as I enjoy dark backgrounds on coding environments, I think we should try going with a light background on this one, as it would bring out the content better.
The colors you described inspired me to whip up a palette along the lines of this.
I also feel that the navigation menu is a little clunky and busy. We should probably settle on the content of the page first and then decide on the content sections' positions.
@modkaffes That's true. We should probably need a light background if we have a lot of content to show. And, yes, we must decide about content first and then design. Some content related proposals are on this issue but as I said before the community (...) will have to decide the content needed.
I like the color scheme. One idea that lurks in my mind is having the main page somehow feature the latest video blog entry from our vimeo channel, and let the visitor navigate to the previous ones.
I also agree we shouldn't add content or menu items for things we don't have right now.
A quick list of things we have in other sites or repositories is:
What am I forgetting?
I prefer the content somehow being blended into the design, instead of listing many different little menu items. An example is, instead of the "Media" menu item, design a container that has embended the latest video post, and then decide where it fits on the landing page.
Likewise for photos, meetups, etc.
I am not a designer, unfortunately, so I can't Photoshop-mockup shit, but I can try a Balsamiq mockup or two if anyone wants more direction.
@petros Most of the common menu links and (website) content blocks for a community portal are listed on top issue https://github.com/thessrb/thessrbio/issues/9#issue-48817920.
@theodorosploumis  I just wanted to say I prefer less links, and more containers that will serve the same purpose as the links, but present the most recent content from that page.
I think the 3rd and 4th mockup are suit better for our designing needs since they are more relative to the ruby jewel (color). @petros we can start with the things we have and ofc expand the site with more things later.
About the inspiration boards i choose the one at row 1 and col 4 (the wall with blocks). So cool and simply.
Also, i think we should have a menu about the content and the details we discuss on each meeting.
ps: And one more reason i choose 3 and 4 mockup is because i can see myself at the background hahaha :P
My humble opinion is that the third mockup is the most beautiful. I think that is very clean and i liked very much the contrast that makes the red color with black. @theodorosploumis nice job !!
I just started to watch this, so I'll share my opinion as well, although you've pretty much said it all. I am with @petros in terms of showing more instead of having many links and I agree about the light background. Also, @modkaffes +1 for the palette. If I manage to complete a design should I throw it here or we are in a final state of choosing one?
Hey @apostoiis!
We are definitely NOT in a final state.
Have in mind that in our last meetup we "decided" that we will proceed with a template/theme from ThemeForest (or similar) so we can iterate more quickly because there was no "actual" participation/contribution after the first mockups @theodorosploumis did.
BUT if you feel that you want to try it out then GO ON and send your design, we will be happy to discuss it!
Feel free to reopen or tag this issue if needed. Happy new year!
About
Here are some moodboards and mockups for the homepage of Thessrb.io.
Looking for similar OS communities and after some research I 've managed to create a basic architecture for this website. These are just proposals, the Ruby Community will decide about the design, elements, content ect of the final website.
I must confess that the logo provided made things a bit difficult. The way it is designed (lines and no fill) does not allow for too much flexibility on the design. This is my poor opinion. Anyway this is the logo and we have to deal with it.
