Guardian Node is taking a long time to sync to the Theta Network #28

Closed clutchnshift closed 2 years ago

clutchnshift commented 3 years ago

Hello,

I had setup a Guardian Node on my PC since September 2020, running Windows 10 Pro. Just before Thanksgiving, the Guardian Node was pulling a lot of resources and my PC was locking up. I let a few weeks pass and then attempted several times to start up the Guardian Node, no luck. The GN is taking a long time to sync. It does the snapshot quickly, no change, but the actual sync-to-network part will start off at about approximately 95.5% and it will take about a day to get to approximately 95.6%. At this rate, it will take over a month to sync, assuming it remains constant. Not only that, but if I allow the GN to run (attempt to sync) for more than 24 hours, it will really slow down the PC, I would need to reboot, especially by the 36th hour...never syncing to the network.

Since I was able to run the GN in September with a sync time of about 1 hour, give or take, why is it taking longer now? My PC is not optimal, since it locks up pretty good, but can someone explain why the Theta Network is harder to sync to?

Did the network get bogged down because of the additional Guardian Nodes (reaching 2,200+)?

I would figure that a solid machine wouldn't lock up at all, may not even flinch or skip a bit, but with a slow machine you can notice a difference between September and December.

In late September we were at ~50.5% total staked Theta, with ~1,380 Guardian Nodes.

On 14NOV20, we were at 52.35% total staked Theta, with 1,472 Guardian Nodes.

Right now we are at 55.5% total staked Theta, with 2,264 Guardian Nodes.

@clutchnshift try resetting your node database. Using the app's menu, click Node -> Delete Node Database and follow the prompts.

jieyilong commented 3 years ago

Yes please try Node -> Delete Noe Database to sync from the most recent snapshot.

Dossoar commented 3 years ago

I'm having the same issue with the node not syncing.I have tried the above suggestions but still get the same results.

clutchnshift commented 3 years ago

@clutchnshift try resetting your node database. Using the app's menu, click Node -> Delete Node Database and follow the prompts.

—————

Thanks and sorry for the slow feedback, it worked!

After rebooting my PC, as soon as I deleted the Node Database, the GN restarted (as per the prompt) and when it came back up, the Snapshot & Validation phases were very quick, but the Syncing was slower than I remembered it.

I rebooted my PC again, then selected my Performance Tier down to the second level (Premium. I was at Platinum) and once again deleted the Node Database.

This resulted in a 2-minute GN Snapshot/Validation, and the actual Syncing portion started at 95.95% and ran about 33-35 minutes to reach 100%.

But, after about 18 hours, my PC’s clock froze, the system was sluggish, even though the GN carried on.

I rebooted my PC yet again, I selected the lowest Performance Tier (Standard) and deleted the Node Database once again. The GN was up and running again, in less than 40 minutes.

18 hours later, the GN is still running, my PC’s clock has not frozen and everything seems to be running fine, my PC is stable.

From what I gather, the appropriate Performance Tier should be selected, depending on your system’s capabilities, so the System doesn’t come to a halt, but also one should Delete Node Database anytime you restart the GN or your System, to keep the GN running optimally.

THANK YOU for providing the Node Database information, much appreciated!

juliancedrone commented 3 years ago

I'm running into the same issue except when I try to delete the node database nothing happens. The node just keep spinning at 99.98% and no matter what performance tier I adjust it to nothing works. I even uninstalled and reinstalled and when I launched the setup.exe instead of taking me to the installation welcome screen it just automatically started trying to sync to the theta network even after a fresh install. I've tried everything in your post and no success getting synced.

Dossoar commented 3 years ago

I have left my node syncing now as I'm way for a few days.Just hoping when I get back it's back up and running. It's Currently around 99.80%.

juliancedrone commented 3 years ago

I can't even get my node to allow me to delete the node database, and it wont let me do a fresh install either, just keeps looping me back to the "syncing" where it stays stuck forever at 99%. Can't sync and can't do a new install.

MichaelaL27 commented 3 years ago

Thanks a lot for the above thread. I had the same problem starting Jan 5th since my computer was on stand-by and I learnd that that obviously causes the node to stop. Synchronizing got stuck and did not proceed over 99.97% after 24 hours!!! After downgrading my tier to standard AND then deleting the DB, within less than 60 minutes all got up again!! HURRAY!

Dossoar commented 3 years ago

After being away for a few days I've finally returned to find that the node is back up and running. Not sure at what time it finally synced. It was still syncing after 12 hours when I initially left it.

maxymax68 commented 3 years ago

I had tried all possible solutions as described here, however I still see a message in the log "local not ready". Any idea on this?

Same problem here. I've been trying to switch performance tiers but no luck yet. I will tell you if I'm successful.

Same issue after deleting the node database. I'm trying on another device now. Looks like the percentage calculation is buggy as well. Managed to get to 271% of a snapshot download.

I still have issues with the syncing now and again but it always syncs eventually. It has definitely put me off from staking all my Theta on their.I only stake about 20% now.The pre elite edge node for staking Tfuel is excellent. No issues with it at all.

Syncing Theta Network 99.99% (9,214,298 / 9,215,623)

It’s currently taking my setup 60-75 minutes from Start to Synced.

If you are at 99.99%, just like the one person above, let it sit. I’ve had it stuck at 99.99% before for a bit (hour?) when it’s late at night and when I wake up in the morning it is up and running. 99.99% is a good sign, stuck at anything less, read below.

If you just started the Guardian Node (GN)...

  1. Downloading Snapshot (mine runs to 270% at the moment, no big deal, it used to be spot on last year, now it keeps climbing but it completes fast, like a minute or so, so meh).

  2. Starting Node...(fast)

  3. Validating Snapshot (this can run a bit, around 30 mins, give or take, percentage increments by 5% at a time).

  4. Loading Snapshot (this can run around 15 mins, give or take, percentage increments by 5% at a time).

NOTE: IF YOU TRIED TO “delete node database” during the first 4 steps, it won’t do it. (UPDATE 14MAR21: this is no longer true, IIRC, you can do this action at any time). You must get the GN to restart in order for it to work (like a reboot after a S/W update!). So, no GN restart, no node database was deleted. You will need to do this while the GN is actually Syncing Theta Network OR while it is already Synced-Up and running.

  1. Syncing Theta Network (runs around 15 mins, give or take. This is where people’s GNs can really get stuck or just take too long, if so “delete node database” and monitor the GN, make sure you get to the point below...

NOTE: If you start Synching Theta Network around 99.95% and above, it is likely to be a swift (as can be) Sync for your GN at that point, just let it run and make sure you don’t get stuck at 99.96% or less for longer than an half an hour, if so - DELETE NODE DATABASE! If this still hangs up, reboot your machine, start up the GN and follow the steps above. This is what I have done since I started this thread and it works (my PC is 7+ years outdated, by the way, nothing fancy). If you do all of the above and it still runs long (few hours), let it run to see how long it will take for your setup to come online, use this as YOUR benchmark for now.

Good luck!

Simply put, Staking THETA has no risk due to your GN acting up. Staking THETA just enables YOU to RUN your GN and earn TFUEL while your GN is Up-And-Running. Your THETA would be released to your staking wallet should your GN become compromised. The only thing a hacker or corrupted GN can do is send your THETA back to your wallet. It’s better than having your THETA in cold storage or some other wallet not earning anything (besides appreciating in value). They want you to stake so that it creates financial stability within the project (no swing trading effect, IMHO)...and as a reward, your TFUEL and THETA “protocol governance” voting rights. Remember, how much THETA you stake determines how much TFUEL you earn when your GN is running.

I just built a new pc. Asus ROG Strix, 6 core Ryzen 5 3600, and asus tuf 4GB pcie gpu, sata 3 6gb ssd. I have zero issue running edge node but my network card stops working if I run the guardian node. I was able to get it to o sync once after 6 tries but then after it ran for 15 min the network card stopped working. Very odd as a reboot is the only way to get the nic to respond again. The pc itself has no issues working...just the nic which is onboard.

It took me over 8 hours to finish syncing my GN. My question is can i unstake my theta when the node is not up. Like if it gets to the point where after a reboot, it never finishes syncing. Can I unstake my THETA if the GN isn't fully up?

I downloaded Theta GN. The first installation appeared to behave normally, with modest wait times. Then it started cycling over and over with downloading, validating, taking a health check, syncing over and over. I deleted the database and deleted the node some four or five times, eventually letting the process run for some eight or nine hours. I deleted everything on my updated Windows machine with no luck. I could not find one resource on their website to assist. Can anyone help with this?

Ampiaz, I have also noticed the same thing with my router. About once a month, if I run the GN fro longer than a couple of days, I find the need to reset my router. Not sure what is causing this (other than the GN). Have you found out how to avoid it?

Dadsontourllc, perhaps your GN function of Delete Node Database is not responsive, try manual deletion of the same...follow this link. https://github.com/thetatoken/guardian-mainnet-guide/issues/24#issuecomment-749295011

JC72-7, yes. Staked THETA has no risk due to your GN acting up, running normally or stopped. Staked THETA just enables YOU (via GN Key) to Run your GN and have it earn TFUEL Only while your GN is Up-And-Running. Your THETA is still located in that wallet, you just can't move it until you Un-Stake it. When you Un-Stake it, it should take around 53.6 hours (avg at the moment), and once it is Un-Staked, you will be able to update that THETA any way you wish (no longer isolated within that wallet), but you will not be able to run that GN until you Stake again, IIRC.

Hello:I contacted Theta Network help.  They worked with me throughout the day and said my situation is not uncommon (apparently when I was trying to install a Theta node I sent my coins to a node that was in fact created somehow. . . ).I was told by one of the help people not to worry about it, they will work on it.  Hmmmmm.Anyway, thanks for getting back to me. If I cannot recover my coins, I'm considering this a learning, albeit expensive, experience. School of hard knocks, as they say. Thanks again. Following up on my GN not syncing to the THETA Network. I haven't dug into what caused it, I am only speculating that it was a software update that was buggy, because many people had the same issue around the same time. I am now running the GN version 2.2.10 and under Platinum. It is running like a champ. However, I did have to unstake my old GN, wait 53 hours (at the time) to have the tokens released back to my wallet. I then reinstalled the GN software, having manually deleted the GN folder on my PC (as per manual database deletion...https://github.com/thetatoken/guardian-mainnet-guide/issues/24#issuecomment-749295011 ), this was deleted prior to reinstalling the GN software. Once I had the tokens availabe in my wallet, I re-staked them to the reinstalled GN on my PC.

Was it perfect? No, I still have to do the occasional DELETE NODE DATABASE to get it moving. Expect to do this every time you startup your GN after having it run for longer than a few hours. I don't run my GN at all times, so when I restart it, it tends to get stuck on 99.96% and when I see that it has not budged in over an hour I DELETE NODE DATABASE and monitor it for a good start up. It has also gotten stuck at 99.98% for a couple of hours, but that is a good sign, just wait it out, it could go a couple more hours.

On the plus side of this new 2.2.10 version, I did notice that one can DELETE NODE DATABASE sooner than I had listed in the above timeline (https://github.com/thetatoken/guardian-mainnet-guide/issues/28#issuecomment-779445862). Also, it looks like they fixed the DOWNLOADING SNAPSHOT phase, which was running into the upper 200% and counting. I now stops at the expected 100%.

Lastly, not sure if it was clear up above, the GN software is just an enabled part of the TFUEL making machine, it just references what THETA you have "staked" in your wallet, and this enables you to run your GN on your device. Deleting the GN on your device does not obliterate your THETA, it remains "staked" (holding pen) within your wallet until you command it (action within your wallet) to become "unstaked" (stake withdrawl). After those hours pass, the THETA tokens you had "staked" will be released back into your wallet for the purpose of just sitting there and this makes your tokens available for you to do with them as you please (send/transfer, exchange, stake, etc.)

P.S. don't trust anyone asking for your logins or phrases, scams, don't do it. Unless you are dealing directly with an exchange, you are pretty much on your own with crypto, it is my understanding.

So I followed your guidance, reboot machine, set tier to standard, deleted node data base, after about 1:30 hours , I started to stake. I guess Theta need to explain the staking performance tier more explicitly. Thank you so much for your help! Also the 99.95% is a quick reference what may work.

Thanks, I have a new MacAir with 16G and M1 chip, performance tier set to standard. Initially, I have same issues and trying to reinstall Theta guardian note, rebooted machine etc. but nothing works.

So I followed your guidance, reboot machine, set tier to standard, deleted node data base, after about 1:30 hours , I started to stake. I guess Theta need to explain the staking performance tier more explicitly.

Thank you so much for your help! Also the 99.95% is a quick reference what may work.

Additional info.

The setup to run Guardians node using the standard tier is considered working for me, I got tfuel reward after 4days and staked 6000 theta. Please note the memory for running this guardian node is close to 8 GB.

Will see try upgrading the tier to performance if I got a chance.

Thank you so much!

After some six hours of working on the GN, I gave up.The next morning, all my THETA tokens were gone.  Apparently, when I thought I had successfully installed the GN, I had "staked" my tokens to another address.  This person immediately moved my tokens to another address then split them and sent them to two separate addresses. This is all recorded on the THETA blockchain.  THETA support told me:  There are scammers out there.Good luck. On Thursday, March 25, 2021, 04:36:45 PM PDT, hocklutan @.***> wrote:

Syncing Theta Network 99.99% (9,214,298 / 9,215,623)

It’s currently taking my setup 60-75 minutes from Start to Synced.

If you are at 99.99%, just like the one person above, let it sit. I’ve had it stuck at 99.99% before for a bit (hour?) when it’s late at night and when I wake up in the morning it is up and running. 99.99% is a good sign, stuck at anything less, read below.

If you stake to a node address, whether yours or another’s, it cannot be stolen. If the node is ever corrupted, then the tokens go back to your wallet. Unless you mean you transferred your tokens to a different address. Yes, there are scammers out there. I learned my lesson to NEVER show your keys to anyone under any circumstance. You are the only one who should know them.

  • Downloading Snapshot (mine runs to 270% at the moment, no big deal, it used to be spot on last year, now it keeps climbing but it completes fast, like a minute or so, so meh).

@clutchnshift try resetting your node database. Using the app's menu, click Node -> Delete Node Database and follow the prompts.

I have done so. Now I am stuck with the same problem. Have resetted it 5 times. already

It appears you've misunderstood the terminology here. If you stake your theta to a Guardian Node, the theta tokens cannot be moved to another account or otherwise stolen. If the GN node goes down, they're automatically returned to the originating wallet after a few days, and you can unstake your Theta from within your wallet at any point.
