Since this has been a very controversial item in the past, I clearly suggest to discuss this with Board and WRC before putting any effort into it. Am 31.12.2015 08:41 schrieb "Jeremy Fleischman" notifications@github.com:

It seems like it would work to ask people to opt in to age statisics.

I am in favour of displaying age with the competitor's consent.
Just to record my thinking here for others, here's what I told Tomoaki, who brought this to my attention yesterday:
Hey Tomoaki! As a somewhat older competitor, I too, would love to see age statistics again =). Adding a checkbox is easy, but I'm actually not familiar at all with the old PHP code that did age statistics. I've created an issue on GitHub for this here: https://github.com/cubing/worldcubeassociation.org/issues/285 Unfortuantely, I am only one person, and there is a long backlog of issues I think are more important =( If you, or someone else is motivated to add this, I am very open to discussing pull requests on GitHub. Otherwise, this is something I'd like to get to ... eventually
I do think we should at least wait until #175 is done before we work on this.
I've created a new label will-accept-pr
for stuff like this that I'd be happy to see, but am not planning on working on myself (anytime soon, at least).
This is still a highly controversial topic, where we need full approval from WRC (regulations say it's not public information, so we can't publish anything about it) and Board first.

In a lot of sports which do age divisions, competitor age is determined by birth year. I.e. in 2019, a competitor born in 2000 would be considered 19 years old, regardless of whether s/he was born on January 1 or December 31 in that year. Making competitor age data by birthyear public would not be disclosing personal info.
When large competitions are looking for corporate sponsors, these sponsors and advertisers are often interested in demographic information, including age distribution, of the target audience. What if the age data weren't even posted on public profiles, but at least available in the exports?
