i hope you can help me understand what's the what here
i dont know if this can be controlled by the launcher, xbmc or x ?

im running xbmc in 2 places

1> localhost is my main box
running a kubuntu 8.10 desktop
w/ SVN 18324 from the PPAs
all works well. launcher load some games
keyboard & joystick work in the emu's

2> xbmc.local is in the living room
it has a kubutu desktop also
i created a new user and set kdm to auto-login

XBMC is started from ~/.xsessions
  export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true
  export XBMC_PLATFORM_MODE=1
  exec /usr/share/xbmc/xbmc.bin --standalone

launcher loads roms,
and i can play them with the joystick
but keyboard control stays w/ xbmc

keyboard keypreses make xbmc sound effects
but xbmc is frozen until the emu ends
... then all keyboard presses are exe'ed

why is this happening on xmbc.local and not localhost ?
any insight would be appreciated

please explain exactly what is the different between the computers?
I'm running xbmc+launcher without kdm/gdm, directly on X and it worked fine.
perhaps you should open a thread on it in xbmc fourms.

localhost runs xbmc as an application
this is my main desktop pc,
with a kubuntu 8.10 install

the other one, xmbc will not run directly on X
..."a valid openGL driver is required"...
i need help figuring that out,
i have fglrx !

this machine also has 8.10 desktop installed
user 1 was created on install,
user 2 i created to run XBMC

i set kdm to auto-login, so i could get around the fglrx stuff.
guess ill have to sort that out with some more research
and probably a post on the forums like you suggested
