When using this package my laptop draw extreme amounts of power, draining the battery by 50% in under an hour.

I watched the power consumption in activity monitor on my Mac and it jumps up to 51.0 (I don't know what those units are). Building it with the bash pdflatex command just uses 5.0

Can you verify that this does not happen if the latex package is disabled in Atom?

It probably is related to this bug, so atom always has an extremely high energy consumption, but using the latex package while compiling massively spikes the energy consumption.
