updating the svg file does not update the icon

one problem I've noticed for some time is that if I load the svg icon, assign it to an entity and then later overwrite the svg icon to modify it, this doesn't change its appearance on lovelace. if I change the name of the file it works. i tried restarting, taking off the icon and restarting but it seems the icon is being saved elsewhere. is there a trick to fix it?
