Compiz stops working after installing steam-login

I installed steam-login and it worked fine. Then I tried logging back into Unity and nothing came up. After a couple more tries it would sometimes bring up the crash dialog so I tried running it from in the terminal after Ctrl+Alt+F1 and I got the output below

So I googled the first line that had an error in it and the only thing that came up was this page https://forum.ubuntu-gr.org/viewtopic.php?p=288512 . It's in greek but with Google Translate it does make mention of xfwm4, so I think the xfwm4 dependency in steam-login caused this.

Before I go reset things in xfwm4, or uninstalling steam-login, any suggestions on what I should do?

The only workaround is to completely reset compiz's config by deleting its configuration folders. Someone gave me the workaround here http://askubuntu.com/questions/350623/compiz-is-crashing-on-startup-in-ubuntu-13-04-after-installing-steam-login/351198

Pretty strange this, since xfwm4 shouldn't mess up with compiz settings. I will try to look at some alternatives, maybe metacity, but I'm not sure if metacity is still being mainteined.

I was able to find a work around that may invalidate the need for a fix. I was running the beta version of the steam-launcher deb for linux, which was upgraded over time with the ubuntu repo version i assume. I uninstalled it and reinstalled the ubuntu software center version. Then I did a rm ~/.steam (not rm -rf ~/.steam)

Not sure which of those things fixed it but after that it worked.
