Black screen

Hi,

I tried steam-login on 2 AMD_64-based systems:

AMD A6, integrated RadeonHD6350 AMD PhenomII, wih Radeon HD6770 Both LinuxMint 14, Kernel 3.7, AMD Catalyst fglrx 9.11 (latest)

I can use Big Picture on both systems, but logging with steam gives a silent, black desktop :-(

could you please try openning your desktop, and open a terminal and type: steam-de

paste here what is printed on the terminal.

When I did I was logded in at Cinnamon Desktop. I will repeat when logging in with Gnome Classic (Fallback, no effects) When I did I could notice the change in window manager. As a result the mouse now dissappears on the window borders :-( And no Steam (see seg fault at the end). Normally I can open steam, but playing games in Cinnamon Desktop is not always possible.

that looks like to be a bug in Steam itself. Big Picture actualy works when you click on the interface option?

If it works, Try to execute this inside your desktop, and see if the same error happens:

killall steam; killall steam.sh; killall MainThrd; #Just to kill steam and make sure steam is not running steam -bigpicture

So that is a bug on Steam, I will close this bug here.

  Perhaps a bit fast, because I can use Big Picture when using XFCE
  as Desktop. I do get a similar black screen when using Cinnamon

Thomaz, that was actually the output from my test, not mcoumans's (as I recognize my home folder)

Edit: my window manager is Unity btw (found by executing: echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP)

Thomaz, I choose to install and try XFCE for that reason, as it's used by steam-login.

Now, in XFCE: From terminal I cannot run "steam -bigpicture", however, I can run steam and than select big picture mode.

Ok, so this actually a bug on steam itself. Add your finds on ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#408 report by belgianguy. I'm also watching that bug.

and as I said, I will this week release another version with improved handling for when steam crashes, this won't fix the issue but it will make more clear that steam crashed.
