Sucks to have paid 40 bucks and not seeing even a chapter update in 3 months...

I completely forgot this book existed until I saw this. Would really like to hear some indication of what's going on.

pgporada commented 9 years ago

I look at the folder on my desktop everyday and cry a little inside.

aaronarboleda commented 9 years ago

I actually just bought this book a couple of days ago as I am an experienced game developer and have written my own roguelike framework in C++ for fun, but I am in a new job and learning Ruby for the first time. I figured it would be most fun to do it with roguelikes and was going to do it from scratch but I stumbled upon this project on a google search.

I was a bit disappointed after purchase to see that the last update was several months ago even though the book is far from complete, but if the project resumes then I am hoping to keep track of it and hopefully even contribute to the effort!

I would love to see more on this project! I really enjoyed the first 3 chapters

halogenandtoast commented 9 years ago

Hello everyone, I'm sorry for the lack of content. Things happened and I haven't had the time to write. I'm working on getting some time blocked off to finish my next (and probably favorite) chapter, but it's still going to take some time to get it ready. I'll be sitting down tomorrow to push through some more content.

onlydole commented 9 years ago

Thank you @halogenandtoast for the update! Looking forward to all the fun new chapters! :+1:

danfrenette commented 9 years ago

Sounds awesome, glad to hear the project is still being worked on

halogenandtoast commented 9 years ago

I also just released a Gumroad update detailing a bit more of what happened and what will be happening.

sardaukar commented 9 years ago

Thanks for the update @halogenandtoast !

halogenandtoast commented 9 years ago

Just a heads up, I'm looking for readers to review #23 so if any of you feel up to it, let me know. I know it's been a long time coming, but I like how it turned out.

Dead again?

halogenandtoast commented 8 years ago

It's not dead, just sleeping! Just kidding. I'm still working on the next chapter I'm hoping to have it out before the new year.

Fair enough. Thanks for the quick reply

halogenandtoast commented 8 years ago

No problem. It's slow progress I understand. I'll try to keep branches per chapter for progress.

Reopening, per #26

i get that i paid for this, and was really interested to go through the tutorial, maybe it's time to open source it and get the community to help out?

Trevoke commented 7 years ago

Wow, I had forgotten about this. This has now become the project that tarnishes Thoughtbot's reputation in my eyes.

Can I get some free merch, never received my refund for a few of the books

christoshrousis commented 7 years ago

Hi @brendastorer ,

Sorry to pull you into this thread, but I cannot find a employee structure on the thoughtbot website and who would be appropriate to address this issue. Seeing as halogenandtoast is no longer an employee at thoughtbot, I think he has gone silent on this repository?

Can you let us know who to get in touch with regarding potentially converting this project to open source? Personally I can't commit much time to this project, but maybe there are some keen people out there that are able to contribute? I'm sure there are people who have paid who would like to see this book finished no matter the way it gets finished.

If this project is 100% dead or whatever, we'd like an update on that as well I guess.

Cheers. Christos

Hello. I'm very sorry to say that nothing has really changed since my comment here https://github.com/thoughtbot/write-yourself-a-roguelike/issues/25#issuecomment-244610922

Unfortunately, things have taken much longer than originally expected, and Matt has only just recently managed to finished the Upcase content I mentioned in that post.

We don't want to let this go on forever, so we're going to try to reach a decision about how to handle this soon and will update here soon. Thanks again for your patience, I really appreciate it.

sardaukar commented 7 years ago

Thanks for waiting, everyone.

Unfortunately, Matt won't be able to complete the book in the foreseeable future, so we're opensourcing the current content, and are open to future contributions. I'll become the project's maintainer going forward.

We're really sorry about how this turned out, but I'm determined to still make this a success.

Feel free to open further issues for discussion, or contact me if you need anything else related to the project.

jcheng8 commented 7 years ago

Hi Bruno, is it still possible to get a refund given the current project situation?

sardaukar commented 7 years ago

Yes. Email me at bruno@thoughtbot.com with your Gumroad purchase info, and I'll get on it.

sardaukar commented 7 years ago

We've tried to refund all users on Gumroad, but we have some issues with some of the refunds not going through. We'll be sorting that out soon. Bear in mind the refunds might take a while to process.

You can email me with any questions you have.

sardaukar commented 7 years ago

Update on refunds: everyone who's paid with a credit card has been refunded, and Paypal refunds will be issued next week.

jjasghar commented 7 years ago

@sardaukar thanks for following through with this, and i'm looking forward to see how the Opensource community comes together to build this.

sardaukar commented 7 years ago

Update on refunds: everyone has now been refunded except for one customer that I'm still sorting out, so Paypal users should be receiving their funds throughout the week.
