Having seen the diff I'm not sure I want to do this any more.

What's the reason you want to call it LICENSE.md? I think just LICENSE is pretty standard (like here https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow), I think even the default if you use the github interface to add the license

It just felt cleaner as all our other root documents are .md

issue (blocking): The LICENSE file is not Markdown; therefore, it does not have an .md extension. For the same reason, a .gitignore file is not .gitignore.md.
