Th06 EoSD / Th07 PCB / Th08 IN: spellcard practice font too small (regression?) #248

The font used for the spellcards in Touhou 6, 7, and 8 is quite small, especially when compared to the text they're surrounded by:

I'm wondering if this could be a regression, since I found this comment from Aug 29 https://github.com/thpatch/thcrap/issues/185#issuecomment-1697818750 where there is a screenshot of the same screen in IN, but the font appears to be the correct size:

Possibly intentional? I've checked base games and indeed the text is larger, but remember, Japanese conveys information in less space, so it can afford larger fonts. eosd font pcb font in font

Like look at PCB, one of Youmu's spell names barely fits onscreen here with the current font size (and it does not fit during the actual game).

The screenshot uses SimHei instead of Touhou Biolinum, so I'm confident that some patch that xts installed made it like this

Oh I see, thanks! I guess it's intentional then (@brliron can confirm maybe?). It still feels a bit odd to me to opt for this rather than shortening the translations (like the hardpatch does), but it's an understandable decision.

TRDario commented 7 months ago

I think "just shorten the translation" is an unnecessary self-imposed limitation for what is at most an aesthetic blemish, especially if you take into account languages that are less compact than english. Size limits are annoying as is in images, I really think we don't need them in plaintext if we can avoid it.

I don't know for this specific case, but overall, we like to use Touhou Biolinum for languages using the latin alphabet because it has a good coverage for these languages, while CJK fonts tend to be awful at that. As for space concerns, I know translators care about that, I think many languages decided to use the Cirno font instead of Touhou Biolinum for Touhou 9 because its characters are more narrow, which makes the text take less space.

Alright, that all makes sense, thanks for clarifying!

For context, I just came back to Touhou after a long time and have upgraded all my games to use thcrap rather than the hardpatches. I was just wondering about the reason for some of the differences that I noticed.

Seems there's no real issue here, so I'll be closing it :)
