on some (a lot) machines disks are hidden behind an HBA, that doesn't convey smartctl calls to the disks properly.
some (not all) hba's are specified in smartctl, bt then we need to call smartctl with the correct paramters.
This issue will be mostly research into smartctl and see how it behaves on nodes in the field
