infer hex sticker #120

Closed ismayc closed 6 years ago

ismayc commented 6 years ago

I asked Thomas Mock (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jthomasmock/) if he'd be interested in putting together an infer hex sticker based on some thoughts that @andrewpbray and I had. Here they are:

infer-mu2 infer-mu1 infer-mu3

So the infer gnome gained insights about the mu parameter hiding in the fir tree using infer

Thoughts appreciated 😃

Cute, but why a gnome? I don’t get it.

Also, do the colors represent something? On Fri, Mar 16, 2018 at 5:40 PM Chester Ismay notifications@github.com wrote:

Because @andrewpbray loves gnomes and Portland, OR has a weird fascination with gnomes. The colors come from the Cascadia flag representing the Pacific Northwest since a lot of the pkg development happened at coffeeshops here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ae/Flag_of_Cascadia.svg/1024px-Flag_of_Cascadia.svg.png

Andrew Bray loves these gnomes:

These designs seem a bit too busy - what about just a fir tree on a green background?

ismayc commented 6 years ago

Wasn’t the gnome your idea, Andrew? You academics are no fun . I’ll let the hipster @rudeboybert decide.

andrewpbray commented 6 years ago

Wet blanket Bray, that's what they call me. =)

mine-cetinkaya-rundel commented 6 years ago

Ok I wasn't going to say anything if Andrew loves gnomes, but since he's not too fond of having them on a sticker either (if I'm reading this right), I'd say it's better to keep it to a design that doesn't need much explanation.

ismayc commented 6 years ago

Fair point. Thomas is going to mock up some ~boring~ less busy designs.

ismayc commented 6 years ago

Thomas has added more designs at http://imgur.com/a/ciYR9. What do you think of these?

mine-cetinkaya-rundel commented 6 years ago

I like the last one.

andrewpbray commented 6 years ago

Hey, yeah, these are looking much better. I think I like all of them (minus the gnome), with a slight preference for those without blue. It looks cleaner to have infer beneath the tree, but there's also an argument for having it in the fir (hyuck).

One thing: I wonder if we can find a silhouette of an older doug fir. When they get old, they get the shaggy look that makes them distinctive. When they're juvenile, they look like just about every other conifer. Maybe this? Either way works for me.

Thanks to Thomas for his work on this!

ismayc commented 6 years ago

One more go at it: https://imgur.com/a/gaYXR

rudeboybert commented 6 years ago

👍. but I'd lighten the alpha on the tree a bit as the green of "infer" will conflict with the black of the doug fir.

rudeboybert commented 6 years ago

Another simplification would be to use the doug fir outline on the Oregon state license plate, which is less busy. But at this point, we're really down to minutiae.

ismayc commented 6 years ago

No point in me playing the middle person here with this being a public repo. Thanks for all your work on this, @jthomasmock. If you all would like any tweaks, please let the very gracious Thomas know!

jthomasmock commented 6 years ago

Hi y'all! Just wanted to follow up. I made an alternate with the doug fir from flag w/ gray or green tree to boost contrast with "infer". I can try extracting the doug fir from the Oregon license plate if y'all are not happy with the current tree. Please let me know if you have any other requests and I can do some revisions this week.

ismayc commented 6 years ago

@rudeboybert @andrewpbray @mine-cetinkaya-rundel I'm assuming you'd like to have "infer" appear below the tree? Or does it make sense to have it appear on top of the tree as Thomas has here? Unfortunately, that feels more like "on-fir" than "in-fir" to me. How can we best also get the "in" in there? That was my reasoning behind including the gnome or Greek letters to make it clear.

Would love to come to a conclusion on this prior to my infer workshop at NESS on April 13. If not, I'll just go with the third gnome sticker shown on the original post 😄

mine-cetinkaya-rundel commented 6 years ago

Haha I didn’t get the “in” thing at all. Also, you have to realize even if I did, I’d call it in-tree (I don’t think I can tell the difference between a fir and some other tree). But regardless I’m perfectly fine wherever the text is placed, and I vote we should go with whichever you prefer!

jthomasmock commented 6 years ago

Checking back in! Would y'all like to have the infer moved down or any other changes?

Thanks! Have a good weekend y'all!

andrewpbray commented 6 years ago

I think my preferred formulation is with the black silhouette and the font below.

ismayc commented 6 years ago

@rudeboybert What do you think of Andrew's top pick?

ismayc commented 6 years ago

I've looked at these too much. Now I don't see a tree. All I see is a duster...

jthomasmock commented 6 years ago

infer_license_plate

So I tried to recreate the feel of Oregon license plate with this one.

At Chester's request, a simple version w/out the "mountains"

rudeboybert commented 6 years ago

I pre-fir a combo of @andrewpbray's top pick and @jthomasmock's latest:

  1. Green trim
  2. Green "infer" lettering at the bottom of tree
  3. Black doug fir tree silhouette, but the one from the OR license plate in @jthomasmock's latest, as it is less busy than the original doug fir. My guess is that it will come out cleaner in a small hex sticker
  4. White background

Great job!

beanumber commented 6 years ago

Ooohh, I like the license plate one a LOT.
