Works for me:
library(magrittr)
x <- 1:100000
y <- rep(letters[1:5], 20000)
for (i in 1:100) {
x %<>% inset(y == 'a', x[y == 'b'])
print(i)
}

Created on 2018-07-02 by the reprex package (v0.2.0).
The following never gets to 100 without an error, either "Error in function_list[k] : replacement has length zero" or "Error in function_list[k] : incompatible types (from raw to integer) in subassignment type fix"
Switching to
x[y == 'a'] <- x[y == 'b']
it works just fine.
