I think this package would be even better with modern setup using pyproject.toml https://pip.pypa.io/en/stable/reference/build-system/pyproject-toml/

I would be interested in making PR, just it might take me couple of days.

Adding a comment to express interest in getting an updated version that allows installation with modern pip (or poetry).

I don't actively maintain it. (The Javascript language has added features that this handcrafted approach can't easily handle, so this package is of only very limited usefulness these days.) I'm willing to consider simple PRs for merge, but I don't have time to carefully review complex changes.
