Wasn't so bold as to provide a default shortcut key but I like it at ctrl+G personally.
I found I was constantly entering/modifying notes using the wrong instrument -- now I just hit ctrl+G and it adopts the instrument the channel was already using at that point in time.

Not sure the text descriptions are as clear as they could be!
To determine current instrument, searches the instrument column backwards starting from cursor row. Doesn't search beyond the current pattern.
