Hmmm... you sure disabling "Enable compositor on startup" has no effect when clicking Apply?

Redo11 commented 2 years ago

it only enables, to disable you need to relogin or restart kwin, which also is annoying, that crashing disables compositor on startup too, not just right now

DarkWav commented 2 years ago

Can confirm that unchecking the checkbox an clicking apply in compositor settings no longer disables compostiting. (Tested on Arch Linux) As a quick workaround, use the ALT+SHIFT+F12 keyboard shortcut which still works fine.

it did reload, but compositing still fully works

That is definitely not normal. I tested on both Intel+Mesa & NVIDIA and in both cases compositing disables correctly after pressing ALT+SHIFT+F12.

Can you check if ALT+SHIFT+F12 works on vanilla kwin for you? If it doesn't, you should probably report the issue upstream along with hardware information.
