doc: Move and expand firmware spec & implementation notes

Description

We're slowly moving documentation closer to the implementation. This moves, updates, and expands the firmware documentation to a README in the firmware directory.

There is another PR that updates the text in in the firmware section #226. Is that included or should maybe included on top of this?

Good catch about #226. Included Joachim's changes and added Co-authored. I think we can close #226.
