sidenote: this PR is entirely convoluted - hard to salvage into meaningful pieces. Given that there is no-one contributing code, so far - I will YOLO this thing when lightguide support is basically there for MK3.

Decided to merge into main even without functional MK3 support to get on. Will open a new MK3 PR soon.
